Fireworks Safety Guide
Read before you light. A few simple steps keep everyone safe and every celebration worth remembering.
All products we carry are legal consumer fireworks in Alberta. With proper preparation and care, fireworks are a safe and spectacular way to celebrate together. This guide covers the rules and tips that apply specifically to Cardston, the surrounding area, and the Province of Alberta.
⚠ Local Rules: Cardston & Area — Read First
Fireworks regulations in our area are layered — federal, provincial, and local rules all apply. Before using fireworks, be aware of the following:
- Town of Cardston: Contact the Town of Cardston municipal office to confirm current fireworks bylaws, permitted dates, and any location restrictions. Bylaws can change year to year. — Town Office: (403) 653-3366
- Kainai Nation / Blood Reserve: If you are using fireworks on Blood Reserve lands, you must follow Kainai Nation band regulations, which may differ from provincial and municipal rules. Contact the Kainai Nation Band Office before using fireworks on reserve. — Kainai Nation Band Office: (403) 737-3753
- Alberta Wildfire Bans: During dry periods, Alberta Forestry issues fire bans that prohibit fireworks use — even in town. Always check current fire ban status at alberta.ca/wildfire before lighting up.
- Permitted Dates: Many municipalities restrict fireworks to specific holidays (Canada Day, Victoria Day). Confirm with the Town of Cardston what dates are permitted in your area.
- Private Property: Always get the property owner’s permission before setting off fireworks on any land you do not own.

Alberta Provincial Rules
Consumer Fireworks in Alberta
- Consumer (F1-class) fireworks are legal in Alberta for anyone 18 years of age and older
- Display fireworks (F2/F3-class) require a licensed pyrotechnician — we do not carry these
- All fireworks we sell are pre-classified as legal consumer products under the federal Explosives Act
- The Alberta Fire Prevention Act governs how and where fireworks may be used
- You must not use fireworks while under the influence of alcohol or drugs
Fire Bans & Restrictions
- Alberta’s fire hazard ratings change daily — check alberta.ca/wildfire before using fireworks
- A Fire Restriction (Level 1) bans all open fire but may still permit fireworks — check the specific order
- A Fire Ban (Level 2) prohibits fireworks entirely across affected areas
- Southern Alberta can experience extreme fire conditions in summer — take this seriously
- Even in non-ban conditions, high winds and dry grass make fireworks use dangerous
Before You Start
Choose Your Location
- Use an open outdoor area, away from buildings, trees, and dry grass
- Keep at least 8 metres (25 feet) of clear space around aerial fireworks
- Never use fireworks indoors, in a garage, or under any structure
- Point all aerials and rockets away from people and property
- Check wind direction — sparks can carry further than you think on the prairies
Set Up Safely
- Have a bucket of water or garden hose running before you light the first firework
- Keep a bucket of sand for anchoring Roman candles and rockets upright
- Have a first aid kit within reach
- One responsible adult should be the designated lighter for the whole show
- Read the label on every product before lighting — instructions vary
- No alcohol for whoever is lighting the fireworks
Protect Your Audience
- Keep spectators at a safe distance — at least 15 metres from aerials
- Never allow children to light or handle fireworks without direct adult supervision
- Adults should personally guide young children holding sparklers
- Make sure the person lighting always has a clear path to step back quickly
- Let your neighbors know ahead of time — it’s just good manners
During the Show
Lighting Safely
- Use a punk (ignitor) or long-reach lighter — we sell Ignitor 5-Packs in-store
- Light one firework at a time
- Light fuses at arm’s length, then step back immediately
- Never lean over a firework while lighting it
- Never hold an aerial firework in your hand while lighting it
If a Firework Doesn’t Light
- Wait at least 5 minutes before approaching a dud
- Never try to re-light a dud
- Soak the dud in water for 5+ minutes before handling
- Double-bag in plastic and dispose of in your regular garbage
- Never throw a dud in a fire or try to open it
Sparkler Safety
- Hold sparklers at arm’s length, away from your face and clothing
- Never hold a sparkler near another person’s sparkler
- The metal tip stays extremely hot for several minutes after the flame goes out
- Drop used sparklers into a bucket of water — never on the ground
- Children under 7 should only hold sparklers with direct adult hand guidance
After the Show
Cleanup & Disposal
- Wait 30 minutes after the last firework before collecting debris
- Soak all spent fireworks in water before disposing
- Put soaked debris in your regular household garbage — not recycling
- Check the whole area for embers before you go inside
- Do not put fireworks waste in a composter or burn barrel
Storing Unused Fireworks
- Store in a cool, dry place away from heat and open flame
- Keep in original packaging in a sealed container
- Never store near gasoline, propane, or other flammables
- Keep out of reach of children at all times
- Never leave fireworks in a hot vehicle during summer
Smoke Bomb Safety
Using Smoke Bombs
- Only use outdoors in open, well-ventilated areas
- Never use smoke bombs indoors or in an enclosed space
- The canister becomes extremely hot — set it on the ground before activating
- Keep away from dry grass and anything that could catch fire
- Do not breathe the smoke directly — stand upwind
- Keep children at least 5 metres away
After Smoke Bomb Use
- The canister stays very hot for several minutes — do not touch it
- Once cooled, soak in water before disposal
- Dispose of in regular garbage once fully cooled
- Do not compact, crush, or puncture the canister
In Case of Emergency
- Fire: Call 911 immediately. Do not attempt to fight a fireworks fire yourself.
- Burns: Run cool (not ice cold) water over the burn for at least 10 minutes. Seek medical attention for any serious burn.
- Eye Injury: Do not rub the eye. Seek immediate medical attention at the nearest emergency room.
- Cardston Health Centre: 144 3rd Ave W, Cardston, AB — (403) 653-4411
- Always keep your phone with you during any fireworks display.
